Grantchester Season 8 Episode 2 Recap
Geordie successfully exonerates Will of any wrongdoing in a tragic motorbike accident at the start of the episode. The characters go to an art show displaying Amedeo Modigliani‘s Reclining Nude series in quest of a more upbeat atmosphere. While Will is taking in the light streaming through the church’s stained-glass windows, Cathy, dressed in a stunning smock, interrupts him to take him to view an Italian loaned painting. They run with Geordie at the exhibition, who grudgingly accepts to go with them on his day off since he worries about Will’s safety after causing a death. The group meets Dr. Abbot, a snobby professor who is obsessed with the Reclining Nude paintings.
Young coeds protest in the middle of the exhibition, calling attention to the unfair treatment of women’s bodies. They contend that while admiring feminine nudity is considered acceptable in art, it is not appropriate in reality. The painting of the Reclining Nude is stolen as the protest degenerates into chaos. Later, a porter called Peter is discovered dead in a hallway with a candlestick to his head. When Geordie and Will start their inquiry, Sheila, a woman claiming to be Peter’s wife, comes under suspicion. She disputes being involved in the murder, though.
